Introduction

Mommy Makeover

Childbirth can take a significant toll on a female’s body, particularly the stomach and breasts. Even with rigorous exercise and a healthy diet, many women find it difficult to get back to their pre-pregnancy bodies. The reason why is that the effects of pregnancy reach far beyond just weight gain. Many women in Austin choose to turn to a Mommy Makeover with Personique® because of the benefits this procedure can provide.

During pregnancy, the average woman puts on somewhere around 25 – 35 lbs, the most visibly drastic change occurs in the abdominal area. The gradual expansion of a woman’s stomach during childbearing causes the stomach muscles to pull apart and weaken. The stretching and loosening of the skin that occurs cause the collagen to rupture and create the appearance of stretch marks. These marks start as a reddish-purple color, eventually fading to white scars.

Who are the Best Candidates for a MOMMY MAKEOVER?

We feel that this, too, is one of the most important questions because it does help to clarify whether you are currently a good candidate, or if you can become one at a later date.

For instance, you are a good candidate if you have been dieting and exercising after childbirth, but are still struggling to restore your skin and overall appearance to its pre-baby condition. This could mean that you have skin that is sagging and drooping, though you have lost weight. It could be that you have stubborn pockets of fat that all your dieting and exercise just won’t erase. We also look at your expectations, as well as your overall lifestyle. Are you in a good weight range? Non-smoker? Our Austin plastic surgery team can help you determine if you are currently a good candidate.

WHAT’S THE FIRST STEP?

If you are a new mother and are interested in the Mommy Makeover treatment, the first step is to contact our office and schedule your consultation with one of our wonderful plastic surgeons. During this appointment, they will ask you about your aesthetic desires, discuss your medical history, and evaluate the areas that you are looking to treat. When going over your medical history, you should maintain honest and open communication with your surgeon, as it will help them make the best decisions for your surgical plan and prevent or lessen any potential risks. You are also free to ask all of your questions and have your concerns addressed during this consultation.

If you agree with the surgeon’s treatment plan for you, you will be able to speak with our Patient Coordinator and schedule your surgery date. They will provide you with certain instructions that you will need to follow pre-surgery for the most optimal results.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE DAY OF A MOMMY MAKEOVER

Every mother will have a different experience on the day of their Mommy Makeover based on the surgery they are receiving. We will use anesthetics of some sort to provide you with the easiest and most comfortable surgical experience, so there should be no reason to be concerned about pain during the procedure. Depending on which procedures you are having performed will change what you should expect during your Mommy Makeover, but we’ve listed some of the more common procedures:

Breast Lift/Augmentation: Since your breasts naturally expand as they produce milk for your newborn, it’s not uncommon to see an increase in cup sizes. Unfortunately, as your baby is finishing breastfeeding, your breasts drop down again leaving flatter and saggier breasts than before. In some cases, your breasts may even be smaller than before breastfeeding. For these reasons, many Mommy Makeovers will consist of a breast lift or breast augmentation. When trying to decide which is best for you, if you notice that your nipples point “south” rather than “north,” a breast lift is a great direction to go; if you feel that your breasts are not as full as they used to be, a breast augmentation may be best for you.

Liposuction: To get rid of stubborn fat deposits, liposuction is sometimes performed in conjunction with a tummy tuck. This procedure is available for women who have developed large love handles or are looking to remove fat deposits in other areas of the body, such as your hips or thighs.

Tummy Tuck: During tummy tuck surgery, your plastic surgeon makes a long incision along your bikini line, which allows the skin and muscles to be “pulled down”, leaving a tighter appearance. If your upper abdominal needs to be tightened as well, a second incision is made near your belly button. The loose skin is also removed and any muscle damage will be repaired. Some women may also suffer from stress urinary incontinence after pregnancy. In this case, your surgeon can also place a small mound of tissue near your bladder to help to regulate urine flow.

Labiaplasty: One of the other common results from childbirth is that a woman’s labia minora gets substantially stretched, causing the flaps of the labia minora to protrude beyond the labia majora. This can be embarrassing and very uncomfortable for many women, as the already sensitive labia minora can be prone to chafing, making exercise or sexual activity unfavorable. For our patients suffering from this, a labiaplasty is very helpful when correcting this problem. The plastic surgeon will carefully remove any excess skin from the labia minora, then stitch up the area. After fully healing, the labia will again become functional and comfortable as it’s protected by the labia majora.

MOMMY MAKEOVER RECOVERY

After your surgery, you should have a loved one or friend ready to take you home. You may be a little groggy and sore as you come out of the procedure, so it’s always best to play it safe when traveling. During the initial stages of your recovery, you should also have someone available to help you perform even some of the more basic tasks to reduce the pain you can expect to experience and prevent rupturing any of your incisions. Your surgeon will provide you with some temporary pain medication to help make you as pain-free as possible during your recovery. Also, keep in mind that you’ve carried your child for 9 months, went through delivery, and have been raising a newborn, take this time to relax and enjoy yourself as best as possible.

MOMMY MAKEOVER FAQs

Is a Mommy Makeover painful?

During your surgeries for a Mommy Makeover, you will be under anesthesia so your experience should be comfortable and pain-free. As you recover, you should expect some bruising during the first 1 – 3 weeks, swelling for 2 – 8 weeks, and some soreness or tenderness for several weeks after your surgery. Your doctor will provide you with some pain medication to help ease any pain or discomfort, but you can also use ice packs to help if needed.

How many appointments will I need?

Among the many Mommy Makeover questions, this is one of the most common. To keep it simple, a Mommy Makeover is always more than a single treatment, and its goal is to help you get your pre-baby body back. It can include treatments meant to undo some of the changes that pregnancy caused and may feature such options as liposuction, tummy tuck, breast augmentation, or even vaginal rejuvenation.

These treatments may be possible with one surgical treatment, but some patients may need several visits or surgeries to get the best results.

How long until I see results?

You should be able to return to your regular activities after 3 months of your procedure, however, it may take a full 6 months to a year until you can enjoy the final results of your Mommy Makeover.

Can I combine a Mommy Makeover with other procedures?

A Mommy Makeover already involves multiple procedures but our goal at Personique is to give you the body and appearance that you want. If there is a specific area that you would like to focus on, discuss whatever they may be during your consultation and your extremely knowledgeable plastic surgeon will be able to suggest the best procedures to help you achieve your desired appearance.

What are the risks associated with a Mommy Makeover?
