We all want clear, beautiful skin. Unfortunately, nature and the aging process aren’t always on our side when it comes to this desire. Environmental pollution, sun damage, stress, smoking and other elements can wreak havoc on our complexion over time. As we hit the late twenties and early thirties, most of us start to notice our skin gradually losing its once radiant glow. Around this time, the skin starts to produce less collagen, fine lines begin to emerge and the complexion starts to take on a dull, ashen hue.

As our body matures, cellular processes begin to slow down and the skin tissue has a reduced capacity for regeneration and repair. Years of sun exposure and damage slowly become evident in the form of hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone.

How Does It Work?

IPL Photofacial therapy can be used to improve the appearance of photo-aged skin, sun-induced freckles, age spots, redness caused by broken capillaries and most benign brown pigments. This process is often referred to as photorejuvenation and requires minimal to no downtime, making it an ideal solution for those with active lifestyles.

During this non-invasive procedure, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is applied in a series of gentle pulses over the treatment area. IPL uses a range of wavelengths of light that target brown (and, to a lesser degree, red) discoloration. Photofacial therapy heats up the structures that hold the color, selectively damaging or destroying the pigment (sunspot) or blood vessel. The pigment is effectively broken up and sloughs off over several days. The result is a more even and brighter complexion. Additionally, IPL light can stimulate collagen synthesis in the dermis, producing a smoother, tighter skin texture.

How Many Treatments Do I Need?

Photofacial therapy in Austin is usually completed in a series of 3 to 6 treatments administered approximately one month apart. How many treatments you require depends largely on your skin tone and the extent of photodamage to be treated. Photofacial therapy sessions typically last about 30-45 minutes. A topical numbing cream can be applied prior to the treatment to reduce any pain or discomfort.

What Can I Expect After Treatment?

After a photofacial therapy session, there is usually some minor redness that will resolve within a few hours. Any remaining redness can easily be concealed with makeup and you can return to work or normal activities the same day. Results of your IPL photofacial therapy are long-lasting and sustaining a proper skin care regimen afterward will help maintain your results even longer.
