OTOPLASTY IN AUSTIN

Introduction

Otoplasty

At our award-winning plastic surgery practice in Austin, otoplasty is a common procedure we perform on children and adults. Most people who are upset because their ears are too big are wrong. The problem usually isn’t that their ears are too big, but just that they stick out. In most cases, pinning them back alongside the head solves the problem completely. This is a common problem for children. Ears that stick out make kids easy targets for teasing, jokes, and derogatory nicknames.

EAR PINNING

WHAT IS OTOPLASTY?

Ear pinning, or Otoplasty, is a procedure commonly used by plastic surgery professionals to correct ears that appear to be too big or stick out, potentially helping patients with this issue to overcome their self-consciousness about this aspect of their appearance.

The sooner in life, this problem is corrected, the better. It can be done as early as the age of four or five for children and at any time for adults. At Personique®, our experts have years of experience performing Otoplasty ear-pinning procedures for a variety of clients in our Austin-area locations. As per our signature practice of putting the client first, Personique® plastic surgeons and aestheticians will meet with you first to discuss in consultation what you hope to achieve through this procedure. Then, we will develop a personalized course of action based on your individual beauty goals.

  • Improved appearance of congenital ear abnormalities
  • Permanent results
  • Provides a natural facial appearance

WHAT’S THE FIRST STEP?

If you are in the Austin area or are planning to get an Otoplasty with Personique, the first step is to contact us and schedule your consultation. During this appointment, you will meet with your plastic surgeon who will listen to your goals for the surgery, ask you about your medical history, and examine your ears. Once they have all the information that they need, they will craft a custom surgical plan for you. If you agree with their evaluation, then you will be able to schedule your procedure date with our Patient Coordinator, who will also give you a list of instructions you will need to follow before you come back for your surgery.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE DAY OF YOUR OTOPLASTY?

Though there are several different approaches to this procedure, the most common one involves reshaping or removing some of the cartilage behind the ear. This is achieved via minimal incision by surgically opening the back of the ear, then either removing some cartilage or folding it onto itself and suturing the reshaped cartilage and skin back together. This process pulls the ear back so that it appears to lay flat against the head. Since the incision and reshaping are all done on the back of the ear, any scars are typically minimal and can usually be hidden in the creases of the cartilage. Like all of the treatments performed by our seasoned professionals at Personique®, the procedure is intended to create natural results that help to restore your self-confidence, not look like you have had any ‘work’ done.

OTOPLASTY RECOVERY

For most clients, the procedure takes about one hour. After surgery, the ears are covered with a dressing to prevent infection and irritation. Any mild discomfort the client may experience can usually be controlled by medication. The dressing is taken off within a couple of days in most cases, though some patients choose to wear a light dressing on their head during sleep for a few weeks, to prevent any irritation while laying on the ears and/or moving involuntarily during the night. Most patients are up and around and able to return to regular daily activities in a day or two after undergoing Otoplasty surgery.

OTOPLASTY FAQS

Is Otoplasty painful?

There is no pain during an Otoplasty as it is performed under local or general anesthesia. You can expect to experience some soreness or discomfort the first week following your surgery, but this can be alleviated with pain medication.

How many appointments will I need?

You will need to return after about a week from your surgery so your doctor can see how you are recovering and check your incisions. You will be asked to return in about 2 months after that to do their final evaluation.

How long until I see results?

The ear-pinning procedure offers immediate, dramatic results that will last a lifetime. Otoplasty is a great example of a plastic surgery endeavor that can produce ever-important positive psychological benefits. If you (or your child) have experienced self-consciousness or embarrassment over the prominence of ears that stick out, consider Personique® for your Otoplasty consultation today. Let our Austin experts help you feel confident and radiant again!

Can I combine Otoplasty with other procedures?

The best procedures to combine with your Otoplasty are those that help build an overall balanced appearance to your face. Many of our patients in Austin will add a Neck Lift or Rhinoplasty to their surgical plan, but any sort of injectables like BOTOX or Kybella is also great in conjunction with Ear surgery, depending on what your goals are. If you are interested in altering different portions of your face or body, please discuss it during your consultation and your doctor will be happy to provide you with their expert opinions.

What are the risks associated with Otoplasty?

While there aren’t many risks associated with Otoplasty, there are some, and these can include but are not limited to:

  • Allergic reaction
  • Asymmetry in-ear placement
  • Changes in skin sensation
  • Overcorrection
  • Problems with stitches
  • Scarring

Our surgeons have a wonderful track record when it comes to providing safe and positive results, but if you are concerned during your recovery or experiencing long-term reactions, please contact our office right away.
