At Personique, we are exclusively dedicated to the practice of Cosmetic Plastic Surgery and our Austin breast augmentation surgeons are experts in the art of physical transformation. There are a number of different factors that go into achieving beautiful, natural-looking breast augmentation results – implant size, shape, position, material, incision placement, etc… However, when it comes to achieving optimal results and patient satisfaction, choosing a highly experienced, board certified plastic surgeon is a top priority.
Successful breast surgery results require heightened technical skill and artistry, precise clinical judgment and clear communication between surgeon and patient. Personique's plastic surgeons view breast augmentation as a collaborative process with your happiness as the ultimate goal.
During your personalized consultation, your physician will evaluate and discuss with you a number of different details to ensure the most ideal aesthetic outcome for your unique frame. Your plastic surgeon will assess factors such as:
- Your personal goals and desired size
- breast volume
- breast diameter
- skin excess
- skin quality
- chest wall asymmetries
Understanding the individual characteristics of each patient along with her unique set of goals is vital to achieving the desired outcome. Choosing a knowledgeable plastic surgeon who takes the time to get to know you and understand your cosmetic goals can mean the difference between results that look artificial and those which provide soft, natural-looking contours.
What is Breast Augmentation?
As one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries, breast augmentation is an effective way to create a more aesthetically pleasing silhouette and enhance your overall appearance. Breast implant surgery aims to correct issues including:
- Underdeveloped breasts
- Symmetry issues
- Loss of volume
- Slight sagging
Who Can Benefit?
Breast augmentation is an ideal way to regain confidence, create a more proportionate figure, restore a look of youthful femininity and enhance overall appearance and self-image. Women choose to undergo breast augmentation for a wide variety of different reasons.
Many of our breast augmentation patients come to us ready for a change after facing years of poor body image and embarrassment due to underdeveloped breasts. While it may seem petty to some people, Micromastia (the medical term for postpubertal underdevelopment of a woman's breast tissue) can have significant personal, psychological and social impacts on a woman. Many women view their breasts as an essential component to their femininity and sexuality. For a flat-chested female, her small breasts can be a source of nagging dissatisfaction and low self-esteem. Individuals who are not completely happy with the size and shape of their breasts can benefit significantly from breast augmentation surgery.
Just about every woman has some degree of asymmetry when it comes to breast size or position. Up to 25% of women have breasts that display visibly perceptible asymmetry, wherein breasts differ in size by at least one cup size. Women with overly pronounced disparity often find their breast asymmetry to be a source of anxiety, causing them to feel uncomfortable in certain clothing or in their intimate relationships. Breast augmentation can help balance the appearance of a woman's bust. There are essentially two options for correcting asymmetrical breasts. The patient may opt to have breast reduction performed on the larger breast to match the smaller breast, or choose to augment the smaller breast using a breast implant.
Sagging or Deflated Breasts
Women who experience a slight sagging of the breasts or who have lost fullness in the top portion of the breast can also benefit from breast augmentation. Women with moderate or significant sagging will likely benefit more from a breast lift; however, breast lift surgery alone will not enhance volume or fill out the upper part of the breast. This is why many of our patients undergo breast lift and breast augmentation procedures at the same time to optimize their results.
What to Expect During Surgery
Your breast augmentation procedure will be performed at our private, outpatient surgical suite. Prior to surgery, the size and type of implant is chosen during your consultation based on your expectation and body frame. We understand that you may feel nervous about surgery. This is only natural of course. However, it helps to know what to expect on the day of surgery and during your recovery period.
What to expect on the day of surgery…
- When you arrive at our clinic, you will be escorted to the pre-op area where our friendly and caring staff will quickly put you at ease.
- Your surgeon will meet with you to answer any last minute questions and mark incision locations with a surgical pen.
- The anesthesia provider will administer a local anesthetic combined with sedation so that you will feel no discomfort during the procedure. You will then be moved into the OR.
- The incision is made either above or below the breast muscle. The location of the incisions for breast augmentation can vary: it can be made in the armpits, or around the colored part (areola) of the nipples.
- After the incision is made, the breast implant is inserted into a pocket, either under or over the pectoral muscle. The method for inserting and positioning the breast implants will depend on the type of implant, the degree of enlargement desired, your unique body type and your surgeon's personal recommendations.
- Once the implants have been properly positioned, the incisions are closed and a compression garment is applied.
- Surgery time varies, between 1 and 3 hours. After your procedure is complete, you will 'wake up' from sedation in the recovery area where you will be monitored closely and cared for by our nursing staff.
- You will typically be released to go home a few hours after surgery. At this point, our staff will call your designated family member or friend to pick you up. You will be sent home with post-op instructions and a special surgical bra designed to support the breasts as they heal.
Post-Op – Breast Augmentation Recovery
As with any surgical procedure, there will be somewhat of a recovery period involved after surgery. However, recovery is considered to be fairly mild in comparison to other cosmetic procedures like a facelift or a tummy tuck.
One of the most common questions that we get from our patients is, "When can I return to work?" The answer to this question will vary from patient to patient. The level of discomfort experienced during your recovery will depend on a number of factors. The incision type, implant size and placement can all affect an individual patient's experience during recovery. Of course, your personal tolerance for pain will be a factor as well. Regarding returning to work, this will also depend on the your job description. If you have a sedentary job, you will typically be able to return to work sooner than someone with a more labor-intensive job. Most patients with desk jobs will be able to return to work in a matter of a few days.
Below is a list of general guidelines for post-operative care during your breast augmentation recovery period.
- Wear large, comfortable clothing after surgery
- Discomfort is expected during the first few days after surgery. Pain medication is prescribed.
- You will not be able to drive; ensure you have assistance during the first week or so after surgery.
- Activity after breast augmentation should be limited. Low pace activity is encouraged, with frequent periods of resting. Keep hydrated.
- No exercise for about 4 weeks after surgery. Consult with your surgeon before resuming normal activity.
- Showering may be permitted 72 hours after surgery
- Do not remove any of the dressing or bandages. This will be done by our nurse.
- Avoid soaking in a bathtub for approximately two to three weeks.
- Avoid heavy lifting.
- Contact us at our Austin office immediately if you experience unusual drainage, fever or discomfort that is not subsiding with medication.
Remember, if you have any questions regarding recovery, or are worried about anything, you can contact your Austin medical team at Personique. We are here to answer any questions and address any concerns you may have.

The type of surgery and extent of the procedure may also influence cost. There are several different methods for performing breast augmentation surgery, and some techniques are more time-intensive and technically demanding than others.
The type of implant used is another factor that will influence the cost of breast augmentation surgery. Silicone implants tend to cost slightly more than saline. There are several reasons for this discrepancy, including the cost of the material used to fill the implant. Both implant types have their own set of advantages and disadvantages, and choosing the right implant for you as an individual will depend on your own personal needs and specific body type. At your initial consultation, our surgeons will discuss your aesthetic goals and assess your body type to help you determine which breast implant option is best for you.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
I would like to have bigger breasts. Is breast augmentation right for me?
The desire to enlarge your breasts or make them fuller can be achieved through breast augmentation surgery. Patients interested in undergoing breast augmentation should understand the details of this surgery. Eligible candidates should be in good health going into the procedure, so that their body can recover properly from breast enhancement surgery. Personique doctors will help you explore options for breast augmentation through the use of breast implants and/or other techniques. At our Austin locations, our doctors provide personalized care to each of our patients, carefully assessing your condition and helping you get the look you want.
What is it like to have breast augmentation surgery?
First, your doctor will administer anesthesia before the procedure begins. Typically, patients undergo breast augmentation surgery under safe sedation with local anesthesia and wake up after the procedure is over. Your doctor will discuss with you the best type of incision for your surgery to achieve the look you want. Breast implants are inserted over or under the pectoral muscle during breast enhancement surgery via one of two types of incisions: in the armpit or around the areola. The size and type of breast implant is decided by you and your doctor, based on your desired results. Your doctor may also recommend breast lift surgery in conjunction with breast implants to achieve a more comprehensive breast enhancement.
What will my breasts look like after surgery?
At Personique, we want you to look and feel your best. As professionals with years of experience in the field of plastic surgery, we work with you to recommend a plan for breast augmentation that complements your frame and helps you to achieve a fuller, yet natural look. Though every client is different, your personal consultation involves reviewing breast augmentation before and after photos of other clients, helping you to visualize your own potential results. Our doctors always consider each client's needs individually, ensuring you and your surgeon are on the same page about how to approach surgery and meet post-operative goals.
How long is the recovery time?
Just like results of breast augmentation surgery, recovery times vary from one patient to the next. Some clients find their bodies bounce back quite quickly after surgery, though doctors recommend all patients refrain from heavy lifting and strenuous activities for an extended period, roughly six weeks, following the procedure. Typically, patients can return to regular activities, barring heavy strain on the chest, in anywhere from a few days to around two weeks' time. Through innovations in plastic surgery methods, powerful pain relief treatments and comprehensive post-surgery care with the Personique team, our professionals help minimize recovery time so you can return to your life as quickly as possible.
