Introduction

Microdermabrasion

Have you noticed your complexion looking a little dull and lackluster lately? You’re not alone. The human skin renews itself roughly every 28 days through a process called skin cell renewal. This process involves the shedding of old cells from the skin surface as newer cells produced in the underlying epidermis are pushed outward, revealing brighter, healthier skin.

As we get older though, this process begins to slow, as does the skin’s ability to shed older skin cells. This build-up of dead skin cells can create a layer of lifeless cells that clog the skin’s surface and cause your complexion to take on a sallow, grey appearance.

WHAT IS MICRODERMABRASION?

Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical, exfoliating treatment that removes dead skin cells from the skin’s surface and stimulates cellular turnover to reveal tighter, smoother skin below. There are many different products and techniques used in microdermabrasion treatment, but the basis of the procedure involves the application of tiny rough grains to buff away the surface layer of dead skin cells.

A specialized handpiece is moved over the surface of the skin evenly to gently polish the superficial layer of the skin as an attached vacuum wand simultaneously suctions and removes dead skin cells.

This gentle abrasion process stimulates new cells to emerge with fresh collagen. Skin immediately looks brighter, fresher, and more radiant. Microdermabrasion is great for diminishing fine lines, age spots, uneven skin pigmentation, and the appearance of facial acne.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE DAY OF MICRODERMABRASION

Microdermabrasion is a very quick and straightforward procedure. When you come, your technician will begin by cleaning your face to prep your skin. After providing you with eye covering (or you can use your sunglasses) they will use a hand-held device that gently and carefully removes the top layer of your skin that lightly lifts your skin. Then, the device is used to spray tiny crystals that exfoliate your skin, simultaneously removing and collecting the dead skin cells. Once the targeted area has been treated, your technician will cleanse your face again to clean away any stray crystals, and finish up by applying moisturizer and sunscreen to protect your new, glowing skin.

The whole process takes an average of 15 – 30 minutes.

MICRODERMABRASION RECOVERY

You should be able to resume your daily activities immediately following your treatment as there is practically zero downtime with Microdermabrasion. After your treatment, you will need to keep your skin hydrated, only use gentle skin care products, and always make sure to wear sunscreen when going outside or staying in spaces with natural lighting. We recommend avoiding topical acne medications for at least one day after treatment. Your skin will be more sensitive to the sun during the first few weeks after your treatment.

You can expect to see noticeable results immediately after the procedure. The number of microdermabrasion sessions needed will depend on the severity of your skin concerns as well as your expectations.
